Angelica Alvarez reads a letter from her partner Edison Pena at Camp Esperanza. This form of communication would become a vital link in countering both the isolation of the miners below and the apprehension of their families above ground. The letters were delivered through a narrow tube - a Paloma - that acted as a lifeline, allowing food, water and regular contact between families and their trapped loved ones. Edison was one of 33 miners trapped underground for 69 days at the San Jose mine after a collapse on 05/08/2010.
