At the Aberdeen Proving Ground, in Edgewood, Maryland, the US military and civilian contractors spearhead the fight against Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the leading killer of US forces in Afghanistan. US Army's chief chemist Way Fountain (right) analyses the evolution of homemade explosives while Mike Trezeckiak (left) and Kevin Wallace (centre) work on training aids for soldiers to recognise IEDs and building new vehicle platforms to provide solutions to the evolving forms of IED that they confront in the field.
