Axum, ETHIOPIA

Axum was the centre of the Axumite civilisation, which flourished between the 4th and 7th centuries AD. There are 119 stelae (obelisks) marking graves of which the tallest still standing measures 21 metres. One of the stelae was looted by Mussolini's troops and taken to Rome where it stood for over 60 years outside the HQ of the UN's Food and Agriculture organisation. Finally, in 2006 after a difficult and protracted process, the stelae was returned to Ethiopia.
