Sulawesi, INDONESIA

Bajau fisherman, Pak Lapoli, demonstrates the method of using cyanide to catch grouper for the live reef fish trade. Potassium Cyanide devastates whole reef colonies as the deadly mixture is dispersed widely by currents and is thought to be more destructive, in the long term, than dynamite fishing. The Bajau (Bajo) Laut are an ethnic group of Malay origin, they have for centuries lived out their lives almost entirely at sea, plying a tract of ocean between Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.
