Boy with balloon at the annual IJzerbedevaart (Pilgrimage of the Yser), which is a yearly event that takes place to remember the Flemish soldiers who died during World War One (WWI). The monument was built as a memorial to those who were killed during the war from 1914-1918. The pilgrimage also serves as a rally for right wing Flemish nationalists striving for Flemish political autonomy. Most of the participants are members of the Vlaams Blok (Vlaams Belang) political party.
