Budleajan lost her twenty-year-old son, Gulam, during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. 'My husband works in Saudi Arabia and the government will not allow him to travel back to me. He has not been here after the quake', Budleajan says. The 7.6 magnitude quake that hit the area on 8th October 2005 killed over 80,000 people. Now, three months on, Budleajan and many other people in the village of Jiggan are still living in tents and temporary houses. The road to the village was damaged in the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and is now closed so the residents have to walk for several hours to get down to the valley.
