Tombia, Niger Delta, NIGERIA

Burnt out buildings in the deserted town of Tombia. Violent clashes between the rebel Niger Delta Peoples' Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and government forces have caused thousands of residents to flee their homes in the town. Violence is common in the oil producing Niger Delta, and the NDPVF claims much of it is state sponsored. The group is fighting for independence for the region, on behalf of its majority ethnic Ijaw population.
