Cattle grazing beneath one of the new large turbines at the Altamont Pass wind farm in Central California. With 4,900 turbines, this is the largest concentration of wind turbines in the world, with a capacity of 576 megawatts (MW), producing about 125 MW on average and 1.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually. The older turbines have caused numerous bird deaths. As a result, the turbines are shut down for part of the year and the older turbines are being replaced by larger, taller and slower spinning ones which are less lethal.
