Community members from Estrella Polar and Covadonga hamlets carry coffins, holding the human remains of 77 war victims exhumed from mass graves in 2009, on their way to the local cemetery for a mass burial. The victims were killed during the Covadonga massacre carried out by the Guatemalan military on 29 March 1982, during the de facto government of General Efrain Rios Montt. The massacre took place against the background of a scorched earth campaign against numerous Mayan villages believed to support the guerrilla forces.
