Sukhumi, Abkhazia, Black Sea, GEORGIA

Couples dance near the shore at the Sukhumi Sanatorium, a holiday complex owned by a Moscow army regiment. It is still used by Russian army officers and their families, but with recent instability in the region it is now protected by camouflaged tanks. Once part of Soviet Georgia, Abkhazia fought bitter separatist war with Georgia in 1992-93 and has been de facto independent since Russia consolidated its autonomous status. It has become a cheap destination for Russian tourists, and it is estimated that almost half a million Russians visit each year.
