Decrepit former worker's houses near the Barreiro industrial zone. Barreiro, a communist stronghold and the hometown of Companhia Uniao Fabril (CUF) which, from the 1930s until 1974, was one of Portugal's biggest chemical corporations and for many years the country's largest employer and exporter. However, after the 1974 military coup and Carnation Revolution the CUF collapsed, and Barreiro fell into decline.
