Dileen and Hadeel, pictured at their temporary accommodation in an abandoned building on the grounds of Koya University, in Koya, northern Iraq. The women and their extended family are from the Sinjar area and fled in August when ISIS suddenly attacked the nearby villages. They came here because they knew the manager of the University and he offered them this building to stay in. The group have received unconditional cash assistance from UNHCR and use it to buy clothes for their children, flour to make bread and kerosene for heating and cooking. Both women reported that the money was very useful as the winter season was approaching and they had extra costs that they had to meet (winter clothing, heating, etc). If they had not received the cash, they would have been forced to rely on their own savings which are already small and they probably would have exhausted them by now.
