Eloino Perdomo Placeres working in his office at his home where he has grown over 2,000 varieties of cacti. He donated plants to help artist and enviromentalist Cesar Manrique to build his own cactus garden at his near-by house. Mr. Perdomo, 86, grows cactus as a hobby, but the village was once economically reliant on cochineal, an insect that grows on cactus and produces carmine, a red pigment used as a dye for food and beverages, as well as cosmetics.
