Abu Simbel, EGYPT

Engineers survey the sawing and removal of a block of sandstone from the rock temples at Abu Simbel during its translocation to preserve the ancient site. The temples date from the 13th century BC and consist of two adjacent sanctuaries; one dedicated by pharaoh Ramesses II to his wife Nefertari and the Goddess Hathor and another serving as a monument to the pharaoh himself. The UNESCO-supervised operation to move the colossal carved rock temples began in 1963, before the spring floodwaters were due to build up behind the Aswan High Dam the following year and flood the archaeological site.
