Farmer and mountain guide Saul Luciano Lliuya stands above the Llaca Laggon which is fed by the rapidly retreating Llaca glacier in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Saul is suing a German energy company, seeking compensation for shrinking glaciers in Peru. The accelerated melting of the Peruvian glaciers represent a dual threat to the population of the region. In the long term, the disappearance of the glaciers would lead to the end of the water supply, on the other hand, their rapid melting has the potential to cause a catastrophe as avalanches into glacial lagoons can create massive waves, generating mudslides that could be devastating for nearby Huaraz, as happened in 1941, when 2,000 people died.
