Female workers sort through quantaties of pig intestines as one of the first steps to making heparin, which is a by-product of sausage cases, at a factory in Rugao. 81 people died in America after they were injected with the drug, used as an anticoagulant, that had been made from raw Chinese herapin. It is believed that the heparin was cut from anywhere from 2-60 percent with a counterfeit substance due to cost effectiveness, and a shortage of suitable pigs.
