Five year old Marina Curi has high rates of lead in her blood. A huge proportion of La Oroya's 30,000 inhabitants suffer from health problems caused by pollution from the Doe Run metallurgical complex. The environmental health organisation Blacksmith Institute listed La Oroya as one of the World's Worst Polluted Places, because of pollution generated at the poly-metallic smelting plant. The site was built as a copper smelting plant in 1922.
