Fort Oranje (Orange), 60 km north of Recife
(Pernambuco), was built by the Portuguese in 1615 as a trading factory (feitoria). Itamaraca was one of the prosperous captaincies of Portuguese Brazil and traded in sugar, tobacco, brazilwood and flax.
