George Buchanan (born 1923), a British veteran of World War II (WW2).
"What I'll always remember are the animals, the dead animals. In Normandy, all the livestock were lying all over the fields. All the cattle and sheep had been killed by shrapnel. I can't get that picture out of my head any more."
"But there were nice things too. When we arrived in the Netherlands, we were walking past a sanatorium near 's-Hertogenbosch. There was heavy fighting and heavy shell fire. Suddenly I heard singing. A young nurse was singing 'Ave Maria'. She had a beautiful voice and sang with warmth and feeling. I stopped to listen. It was too beautiful to miss."
