Gori, GEORGIA

Georgian soldiers wait on the streets of Gori, the town closest to the South Ossetia border. Georgia launched a series of attacks in an effort to reclaim the breakaway region of South Ossetia, which has had de facto independence - and Russian backing - since the end of a conflict in 1992. The attacks prompted Russia to retaliate against positions within South Ossetia and Georgia.
