German Chub Choc (right), is helped by his nephew Arnoldo Choc onto a platform where he plays the marimba during a rehearsal by the music group 'Ecos con la Orquesta de Jesus', an Evangelical Christian group. On 27 September 2009, during a botched eviction, German was shot by Mynor Padilla, former head of security for the Guatemalan Nickel Company (CGN). After nearly losing his life, German recovered but was left paraplegic. Numerous people were also injured or killed during the eviction. A criminal case against Padilla is underway for the shooting of Chub Choc and the murder of Ich Chaman. Meanwhile, a landmark legal case against CGN's parent company, HudBay Minerals, is underway in Canada.
