Gold miner driving a tractor 400m below sea level. Shandong Zhao Jin Industry is one of the largest gold producers in the region, and although this is one of the safer mines, in general China's mines are the world's deadliest. While most of the accidents occur in coal pits, 2,188 died in gold and other metal mines last year. Until now these working conditions have largely been allowed to persist in China, where workers rights are weak and independent unions are nonexistent.
