Graduate student David Ngunga, 36, holds a scoop of dried cassava tops at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. The university is a centre of research for the International Research and Development Centre's (IDRC) Integrated Root Crop and Goat Breeding Program, which seeks to provide improved food security and nutrition for Tanzanian farmers. Cassava, an important element of the project, can be produced locally, then dried and used by farmers to replace imported sunflower seed cakes as a nutritional supplement for goat kids.
