In June 2008, this 11 month old boy fleetingly became the human face of the crisis in Zimbabwe. His mother (pictured) initially told journalists that his feet had been broken when Zanu PF youths threw him to the floor during an attack on suspected supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). The shocking story received international attention and he was offered medical help.
When doctors removed his casts, it was discovered that there was no evidence of bone fractures. The boy had a pre-existing condition, club feet. His mother later admitted that she had misrepresented her son's injuries because she could not afford proper healthcare for him. She maintained that he had been thrown to the floor, and other witnesses confirmed that the house they were staying in had been attacked by marauding militias.
