In one of the biggest civil rights demonstrations in years, thousands descended on the town of Jena to protest a double standard of prosecution for blacks and whites. In 2006, three nooses were hung from a tree outside Jena High School after three black students had sat under it, which then led to several racially-charged incidents. After the last one, six black students were arrested and charged with attempted murder for beating a white student. Police treatment of the six black students, who became known as the Jena Six, was seen as excessive and racist.
