Nairobi, KENYA

Ismael Khalif Abdulle (18), a refugee from Somalia. He was 'cross amputated' in Mogadishu by the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab after he and three other young men were accused of stealing pistols and mobile phones.
Dahir Ga'may, a Shabaab 'judge', announced the verdict without allowing any defence. 'He said we were guilty as spies and thieves, and that under sharia law a hand and a foot must be amputated.' Three days later, on 26/06/2009, the sentence was carried out in front of a crowd. Cross amputation means the cutting off of a hand and foot from opposite sides of the body. Ismael eventually escaped and managed to cross to the government-controlled side of the city before fleeing to Kenya.
