Nebaj, Quiche, Guatemala

Ixil Mayan women prepare food and watch festivities as the Confraternity of San Antonio gives way to the seven-day festivities honoring Saint Anthony of Padua. The Confraternity of San Antonio is one of only 5 remaining brotherhoods in Nebaj that syncretize local spiritual beliefs with those imposed by the Catholic Faith from the 16th century on. Some Ixil Mayan scholars associate the veneration of Saint Anthony as symbolic to a celebration of children and hence, the future.
