Gajre, MACEDONIA

Izair Haliti, an ethnic Albanian, saves his cattle after his family compound was set alight as Macedonian forces moved through the rebel-held village. Macedonia was plunged into crisis in 2001 as rebels staged an uprising, demanding greater rights for the ethnic Albanian minority. A peace agreement eventually saw the rebels lay down their arms in return for an acknowledgement of ethnic Albanian rights in a new national constitution.
