Jean Bertrand Aristide waves to an adoring crowd. Recently reinstated with the help of American military intervention, he had just laid a wreath in the central cemetery in commemoration of the victims of the military coup which had deposed him in 1991. Aristide became Haiti's first democratically-elected president amidst huge popular support in 1990. Due to serve until 2006, he resigned and went into exile in February 2004 after a violent rebellion.
