Along with other Serbs in the area, they are fleeing Kosovo for Serbia in fear of their safety after the withdrawal from Kosovo of Serbian military, police and paramilitary forces. Kosovo is the possessive form of koc, the Serbian word for 'blackbird', an ellipsis for Kosovo Polje or 'field of the blackbirds', the site of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo Field, in which the Serbs were defeated by the army of the Ottoman Empire.
