Khalid Hussein Hassan, 38, is a stateless Kurd from Qamishili, Syria at Kawergosk refugee camp. In 1962 the Syrian government conducted a census to limit the rights of the Kurdish population. A certain number of Kurds were accepted as Syrian citizens, others were considered 'foreigners' and the rest were given a 'stateless' status, even if they and their anscesors were born in Syria. The foreigners and stateless Kurds could not obtain an offical ID card, cannot work for the government, cannot own property, receive academic diplomas and even their marriages are not recognised.
