Frits Meyst

Cukurca, Hakkari Province, TURKEY

Kurds crowded into a refugee camp, having fled the Iraqi Army following the Kurdish uprising against President Saddam Hussein. The revolt occurred at the end of the Gulf War when the Iraqi army was thought to be defeated. The refugees were chased across snow-covered mountains, sometimes in their bare feet, and congregated in camps just across the Turkish border. There they found very poor conditions, with no facilities, food or medical attention, and a hostile welcome from Turkish soldiers. Kurdistan.
