Lelemia Tekaile near his home in the Fakaifou squatter settlement that was established, in the capital, by migrant outer islanders. Floodwaters regularly encroach the settlement during high tides. This area is known as the Taisala or the Borrow Pits, where sand and rocks were excavated by the American military during WW2 in order to build a runway. The land was never reinstated leaving a series artificial lagoons that pockmark the district. The tiny Pacific island nation is one of the few places in the world already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change and global warming. Due to the rising sea level, erosion, and extreme weather events, the island is shrinking and may eventually disappear beneath the Pacific Ocean.
