Local Tibetans greet independent Chinese geologist and activist, Yang Yong, at the campsite next to Gangagenacuo Lake and Rigecuo Lake. The ground that they stand on show visible cracks, with sections of the frozen ground having melted and previously collapsed. This exposes the thin layer of fertile soil to strong winds and burrowing animals, like hares and pikas, further causing degradation and eventual desertification. Scientists say the desertification of the mountain grasslands is accelerating climate change.
