Local tribal people work as day labourers at the NMDC mine near Kirandul town, Dantewada District. As the Indian state-owned National Mineral Development Company (NMDC) mine continues to expand, local people are forced to sell their land, converting villagers from from land owning farmers to landless day laborers. In February 2006, Naxalite insurgents raided the the NMDC mine, killing eight Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and seizing 20 tons of explosives, which are still being used to make improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
