Opaje, MACEDONIA

Macedonian Special Police search a destroyed house on the edge of the village of Opaje after overnight fighting with rebels of the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA). The village was under the control of Macedonian forces, but at some points the NLA front line came to within 200 metres of the Macedonian positions.
Macedonia was plunged into crisis in 2001 as rebels staged an uprising, demanding greater rights for the ethnic Albanian minority. A peace agreement brokered by the EU and NATO eventually saw the rebels lay down their arms in return for an acknowledgement of ethnic Albanian rights in a new national constitution.
