Malia (or Maria), a Nyau that uses female mask and who is highly respected among the all members of the Nyau community, as the mask symbolises the mother of the village and the wife of the Nyau chief. Christian missionaries use the image of Nyau Maria to preach about Virgin Mary in an attempt to convince Chewa people adopt Christianity. Nyau are secret societies or brotherhoods initiation into which confers adulthood onto adolecent Chewa males. Their ritual masked dances are performed at various ceremonies and even at touristic and cultural events.
