Markha Mutalipova (left in 1995, right in 2006) lost both her legs during a Russian rocket attack that killed 7 people in her village, including her mother, in 1995. Markha's mother embraced her to protect her from shrapnel and died saving her child's life. When the second Russian invasion began, in 1999, Markha was walking on her knees. She often did not have correct fitting prosthesis growing up during the war because her village was in the mountains. Markha's aunt, who takes care of her, says: 'When we had to move very fast from the bombs, I would grab her and run with her in my arms.'
