Mads Nissen / Berlingske

Kathmandu, NEPAL

Medical staff draw a blood sample from Victoria. Having been fed only milk in the first 18 months of her life, she is severely malnourished. Layers of milky fat cover her arms and legs thus it is almost impossible to find a vein, at the Annapurna Neurological Institute in Kathmandu. 19 month old Victoria (formerly named Ghane) was born with hydrocephalus and was left abandoned. Cecilie Hansen was so moved by the story of Ghane she read in a Danish newspaper that she decided to fly to Kathmandu to try to assist her and show her the love of another human being; Cecilie eventually became her legal guardian. Victoria died on November 19 2010 from heart failure.
