The fast-paced, rough-and-tumble game is played with the hands while strapped to a small homemade board mounted on a single roller skate base. Players say the short, narrow wheelbase offers better manoeuvrability than a conventional skateboard.
Most of the players are polio victims, and many were previously begging on the streets to survive. The inaugural Skate Soccer African Cup of Nations is to be held in Accra in March 2018 with future Paralympic recognition a longer-term aim.
