Members of 'Youth For Equality' are among the protesters against the government's proposal to raise the quota of places reserved for lower caste students in educational institutions. The Reservation policy is a form of positive discrimination which attempts to raise the proportion of Dalits (untouchables) and 'Other backward classes' (OBCs) in higher education institutions and public sector jobs. Thousands of medical students and professionals went on strike and took to the streets to demonstrate against the plan to increase quotas, claiming it undermined the concept of equal rights.
