Laongo Opera Village, BURKINA FASO

Men carry out construction work on buildings in the Opera Village. White sticks in the foreground mark the position of what will be the centrepiece of the village, the main theatre. The "Opera Village" is the brainchild of the late German theatre and film director Christoph Schlingensief who died of cancer in 2010. He wanted to create an African site similar to Bayreuth in Germany which has become the world centre for Wagner music.
