Men incarcerated in Nsukka prison carry buckets of excrement from the cells for disposal. The prisoners sleep on the floor in cells that are overcrowded, disease ridden and covered with graffiti. According to official figures supplied by the federal government there are 45 thousand people in prison in Nigeria. More than two thirds of the prisoners are waiting years for his or her trial. Tens of thousands, mostly young men, are detained without being sentenced. The mostly old prison buildings are hotbeds for diseases such as tuberculosis.
