Miners finishing their shift at a gold mine at Shandong Zhao Jin Industry. China's mines are the world's deadliest, and while most of the accidents occur in coal pits, 2,188 died in gold and other metal mines last year. Until now these working conditions have largely been allowed to persist in China, where workers rights are weak and independent unions are nonexistent.
