Mother of three, Simone Batista (40) holding her 16 month old baby, Athul, in her home in the former Gramacho dump. When it closed in 2012 many people lost their livlihoods. A community of about 1700 people grew up around the dump, many living in wooden houses built from scraps found among the trash. When President Temer cut the infamous Bolsa Family Ms. Batista's family lost their welfare and is now living off the rubbnish dump, eating whatever food she can find from it. Before the dump closed she was just one of hundreds of recyclers. 'I want to work. No one knows how we live out here. No one helps us here, there are no NGOs and no social services. I hope it gets better because nothing is worse than now.'
