Okuma was totally evacuated in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the nuclear plant is just four Kilometres away. Residents were permitted to return during daylight hours from May 2013. In April 2019, parts of the town were deemed to have been successfully decontaminated, with residents allowed to return to these areas. As of 1 March 2020, the town had a population of 2578 persons.
