Ikela, Equatoria province, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Nkoya Koki (16) is a former child soldier who was arrested by rebel soldiers on returning to his village to bury his dead Grandmother during the second Congo war. His friends who had returned to help him were shot dead. He fought with the rebels for three years before running away to Ikela and joining Zanga-Zanga, a local organisation set up to help child soldiers by recruiting them to work in rebuilding the community, in exchange for food and somewhere to sleep.
