People collect food donations after the recent Sichuan earthquake of 12/05/2008, which measured 8.0 on the Richter scale. There has been a nationwide response to help those affected by the earthquake, and within days, contributions from the country's private companies, not known for their charity, had hit a billion dollars. As the rescue effort goes on the death toll continues to rise, with five million people left homeless in Sichuan.
