Priest Torybi Venanua (C) sits under a tree next to the village chief (R). In many rural villages the priest plays a important role within the community and is paid to protect the villagers against evil spirits. Until recently he was also able to demand teenage girls as payment for his services as part of the traditional practice of Trokosi. Since the system was outlawed in Ghana in 1998, community priests could have many young female villagers working for them as sex slaves.
