Novozybkov, nr Chernobyl, RUSSIA

Routine health examinations and studies of radioactive contamination in food take place in the village of Nowoe Mesto. Most of the rural population eats the food from the earth which is still highly polluted by radioactivity. The region has experienced a radioactive fallout greater than in Chernobyl itself. The health and environmental impacts following the nuclear accident in April 1986 have been devastating, with many people being forced to move away from the region where their families had lived for generations. Cancer and related illnesses, along with the ecological imbalances which are the result of radioactivity, have affected almost the entire local population.
